Back to School, Back to the Field: More Girls Are Starting Their First Season Than Ever

Backpacks are already coming out, and for thousands of girls across the country, that means one thing: cleats are getting laced up, jerseys are getting handed out, and a first practice is about to happen that wouldn't have existed five years ago.

This fall, girls' flag football isn't just growing. It's arriving — as an official, sanctioned, varsity high school sport — in more places than ever before.

New States, New Rosters

State athletic associations keep adding girls' flag football as an official varsity sport, and this year has been the biggest year yet — Rhode Island just became the 24th state to sanction it, joining a class of new states this year that includes Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, and D.C. More schools than ever are fielding first-ever teams this fall. New programs mean new rosters being built from scratch, in real time, this month, with practices starting or already underway right now.

Why Back to School Is the Real Kickoff

For a lot of these girls, this isn't a continuation of something they've always done. It's a first. Roughly half of the girls who join a high school flag football team have never played a competitive high school sport before. That means this week — the week backpacks come out and practice schedules get pinned to the fridge — is the actual starting line for a huge number of new athletes.

Somewhere right now, a coach is finalizing a roster for a program that didn't exist last year. A girl who's never worn a school jersey is trying out for a team for the first time. It's happening this week, not someday.

What This Means Going Forward

Every new program, every new state sanction, makes the next step of the pathway more real — college programs, scholarships, and eventually the Olympics. But none of that happens without this week. Without a coach putting together a roster. Without a girl walking onto a field for the first time, unsure if she'll be any good, and finding out she loves it.

Her Game. Her Gear. That's not just true once she's made it to a college roster or a national team. It's true this week, at her very first practice, in a program that's brand new in her own state.

Gearing Up for a First Season

For a rookie walking into her first practice, the gear bag looks different than a veteran's. She's not replacing worn-out cleats or swapping out an old flag belt — she's building her kit from scratch. That's exactly why Flag-Up exists: gear made specifically for her, not a repurposed boys' version, so her first season starts with equipment that actually fits the way she plays. Our one-leg compression pants are a go-to first pickup for new players — built for the flag-pulling motion the sport actually demands, not a generic legging.

Back-to-school season means new binders and new sneakers — for these girls, it also means a new flag belt and a first real practice fit. We built Flag-Up so that part of the list is covered too.
